Route 116
While you can check out Route 116 before taking on the Rustboro City Gym, you'll definitely need to go there after earning your first Gym Badge. Feel free to check it out beforehand, though.
From the start, the path branches off slightly. Youngster Joey is in the top branch, and he uses a Zigzagoon Lv. 7 and a Machop Lv. 9. Just above him is a Potion. The southern path has Bug Catcher Jose instead, and he's got a Wurmple Lv. 7, a Nincada Lv. 7, and a Silcoon Lv. 7. There's also a Repel near him.
Regardless of the path you took, you'll wind up at the same place and will have to continue east, fighting Lass Janice and her Marill Lv. 10 along the way. Watch out, because this thing has the Rock-type Rollout, which locks it into using that attack over and over again with its power doubling each turn!
A little past her is Hiker Clark with his Geodude Lv. 8 and Geodude Lv. 10. Now you'll see a house, though it's blocked by a man. There's also the entrance to the Rusturf Tunnel with Mr. Briney, the guy from Route 104, standing outside of it (unless you don't yet have the Stone Badge). Apparently his beloved Peeko, the Wingull, was snagged and taken inside by some thug!
Assuming you've picked up HM01 Cut in Rustboro City and have earned the Stone Badge, you'll be able to use Cut outside of battle. If you haven't yet taught any of your Pokemon Cut, you can do so to gain access to another part of Route 116. However, since Cut is an HM move, it can't be forgotten until later in the game, at the Move Deleter, and since it's a pretty weak move, it's recommended to avoid teaching it to one of your main Pokemon.
Beyond the prickly bush that you can cut down, near the house on the Route, is Schoolkid Jerry, and he has a Ralts Lv. 10. If you're used to the old games, keep in mind that Ralts, like Marill, is now part-Fairy-type, so moves like Bite won't be super effective against it.
Make your way through the maze of trees to the northwest until you find Schoolkid Karen. She uses a Shroomish Lv. 8 and a Whismur Lv. 8. The Shroomish is annoying since it likes to use status moves to debilitate you. Chop down the prickly tree next to her, grab the Chesto Berries in the two soil patches, and the Ether by the ledge.
Now you've done everything you need to do for now on Route 116, so head on inside the Rusturf Tunnel!

Now you've done everything you need to do for now on Route 116, so head on inside the Rusturf Tunnel!
Rusturf Tunnel
At the end of Route 116 is Rusturf Tunnel, which eventually connects Rustboro City with Verdanturf Town, but debris blocks the tunnel and you won't be able to clear it until after you're able to use Rock Smash later on in the game.
Inside of the cave, there's just one type of Pokemon for you to find: the Normal-type Whismur. There's a Poke Ball near the entrance.
If you've already gotten your Stone Badge, you'll find either a Team Magma (Omega Ruby) or Team Aqua (Alpha Sapphire) Grunt holding Mr. Briney's Peeko hostage. Approach him and you'll have to fight. He uses a Poochyena Lv. 13 regardless of which game you're playing, but it shouldn't be too much trouble. Just watch out, because Bite can still hit fairly hard and has a chance of causing slower Pokemon to flinch.
After beating him, he'll give you the Devon Parts and then run away. Mr. Briney will run in and see that Peeko is safe, thanking you greatly for rescuing her. He tells you that if ever you need him for anything, he'll be at his cottage outside of Petalburg Woods.
Now that Rusturf Tunnel is clear of any Team Magma or Team Aqua trouble, the man that was blocking the building entrance on Route 116 has moved out of the way, allowing you to check out the inside. There's nothing worth mentioning inside, but it's at least a change.
Back in Rustboro City, you need to deliver the Devon Parts to the Devon researcher waiting near the entrance to Devon Corporation. As you approach him, you'll give him back the Devon Parts and he'll reward you with a Great Ball, which has a 50% higher chance of catching a Pokemon compared to a normal Poke Ball.
The President(Mr. Stone) has a favor to ask of you, but he starts by updating your PokeNav Plus to enable the BuzzNav function of the PokeNav plus, which displays news and events going on in the Hoenn region, plus, if you're connected to Wi-Fi, it will also share and receive various reports with your friends, such as their interviews and so forth.
His favor is simple: he needs you to deliver a letter to a man named Steven in Dewford Town. He'll give you the Letter and tells you that you'll need to cross the sea in order to reach Dewford, but suggests you talk to Mr. Briney on Route 104 about it.
Anyway, go ahead and leave the Devon Corporation. Outside, you'll find either Brendan or May. He or she will remind you about Mr. Briney on Route 104, just in case you forgot already.
While on your way to Petalburg Woods, if you have a Pokémon with Cut, now's a great time to chop down the prickly tree by the southern part of the bridge. Behind that tree is a Revive, which restores the HP of one of your fainted Pokémon by half of its maximum and is very useful to have.
As you head back through Petalburg Woods, there's a prickly tree you can Cut right by where you enter on the northern side of Route 104. It leads to a previously inaccessible area.
There's a hidden Tiny Mushroom between the two trees near the first patch of grass you see behind the prickly tree. You can also talk to a girl just past that to receive a Miracle Seed — a held item which increases the power of the holder's Grass-type moves by 20%.
ou can find the "Mossy Rock" in the northeast corner of the forest. This won't do you much good now, but after beating the game and getting an Eevee (or whenever you happen to acquire one, like through a trade or something), you can level it up by this rock and it'll evolve into Leafeon. There's also a Great Ball right by the Mossy Rock.
Hop down the ledge and keep heading south until you find another ledge. Hop down that, follow the path, and pick up the nearby X Attack. After that, hop down south and you'll be back in the southeast corner of the main part of the woods, with a path to Route 104 directly beneath you.
Remember that old cottage you saw down by the beach? Well, now Mr. Briney is happier than ever and will be more than glad to sail you over to Dewford Town. You just need to talk to him inside of his cottage and stop him from chasing his beloved Peeko.
Accept his offer and set sail to Dewford Town!

Dewford Town
You'll arrive on the pier of Dewford Town. If ever you want to go back, all you need to do is talk to Mr. Briney and he'll be more than glad to take you back and forth between Dewford Town and Route 104.
Inside of the first building from the dock, an Ace Trainer inside will give you a Silk Scarf if you talk to him. The Silk Scarf is a useful held item that powers up the Pokemon's Normal-type moves by 20%. That's particularly useful on Pokemon that are already a Normal-type, like Zigzagoon, Skitty, and Whismur.
The house to the west of that is the Dewford Hall, and it's where what's hip and happening goes on. Well, sort of. Talk to the boy outside and he'll tell you that Potion festivals are the hippest thing in hip, the coolest thing in cool, and so on. You can disagree with him if you want, and if you do, you'll be able to choose an item from your inventory as well as another predefined saying to go along with it in order to construct a new trendy phrase. This phrase may be shared and exchanged with other players, too, presumably through the BuzzNav. Inside of the house, you'll find everyone talking about whatever the trendy phrase is.
North of those two houses is the path to Route 106, which, while you can visit (along with the Granite Cave), you can't really do much there at the moment. Head south instead and you'll find the Pokemon Center. Heal up your Pokemon if you need to, then make your way to the southeast, where you'll find the Dewford Town Gym. You can take it on right now if you'd like, but there's still a bit more to do.
East of the Gym is a Fisherman. Talk to him and he'll give you the Old Rod. The Old Rod can be used to fish for Pokemon in the water, though the only Pokemon you can fish for anywhere you've been so far are Magikarp, Goldeen, and Tentacool. Magikarp is a terrible Pokemon, but once it evolves into Gyarados at level 20, it becomes extremely strong, especially once it learns better moves. Tentacool is also a really decent Pokemon, but it evolves at such a late level that you may want to hold off on getting one now.
In order to fish for Pokemon, you need to use the Old Rod from your inventory. It's in the Key Items pocket and you can select the Register option to make it so you can use it by pressing the Y button, which is definitely recommended for any fishing rods. After you've cast your line into the water, you have to wait until you see an exclamation mark above your head. Press A as soon as you see that exclamation mark in order to reel in the Pokemon; too slow and you'll miss the encounter.
The house to the east of the Fisherman may not contain anything interesting, but you can actually follow the sand on the beach behind it to reach Route 107. There's nothing to do there other than a little fishing and pick up a Super Repel.
Anyway, at this point, you should be all done with Dewford Town and should be ready to take on the Dewford Town Gym. You may optionally visit Route 106 and the Granite Cave to catch a Zubat to help with the Gym, but you won't be able to do anything else there until after you've earned your Gym Badge.

Dewford Town Gym
The Dewford Town Gym specializes in Fighting-type Pokemon, some of which can hit pretty hard with Fighting-type moves. You're going to want to keep your Normal-, Rock-, and Dark-type Pokemon away from these fights, as Fighting-type moves are super effective against these types (as well as Ice and Steel, but you can't normally get those at this point in the game).
Flying-type Pokemon are definitely your best bet here, although the Psychic/Fairy-type Ralts can work as well, even though it's somewhat rare to find.
What sort of options do you have at this point to take on the Gym? Here's a look at some of the best choices you'll have as far as resistance and super-effective hits go:
You can buy Fresh Water from the Vending Machine inside of the Gym for $200 each, and that's actually a really great deal, because each one heals 50 HP — the same as a Super Potion, which costs $700. The only downside is you can only buy them one at a time, but it's worth it to do so.
Whenever you're ready, move on forward into the Gym and fight against the first Trainer, Battle Girl Laura, who uses a Meditite Lv. 13. It's a Fighting/Psychic-type Pokemon, so any of your Psychic-type moves will only be neutral — Flying-type attacks are the way to go.
After you've beaten her, walk forward onto the red button. While you're standing on the red button, the path off to the left will become illuminated. As soon as you walk off the button, the lights go out again, so you'll need to memorize the way to walk.
Walk through the path and make it over to the next Trainer, Black Belt Hideki, who's got a Machop Lv. 13. Its Low Sweep can do some respectable damage, so watch out! There's another red button for you to step on afterwards.
Stumble your way through, following the screenshot above, until you make it to yet another red button.
Battle Girl Tessa guards the path, so if you're getting through the Gym without using the screenshots above, you may want to head back to the button after fighting her to sneak another peek at the path you need to take. Tessa uses a Meditite Lv. 11 and a Machop Lv. 11.
Don't bother with taking a right, as the correct way is to the left after Battle Girl Tessa. Stumble along until you make it to the larger red button on the floor, which lights up Brawly's room.
GYM BATTLE #2
Machop Lv.14 Fighting Type
Makuhita Lv.16 Fighting Type
He leads with his Machop, a solid Fighting-type Pokemon with high Attack. It can soften up your Pokemon with Leer to lower their Defense, then smack the Pokemon with Karate Chop, which has a high chance of getting a critical hit. Seismic Toss may also frustrate Pokemon with resistances by doing exactly 14 HP of damage, while allowing Machop to pull off too many Bulk Ups will make it a dangerous threat, as that raises Machop's Attack and Defense. If you rely on Physical-based attacks, you may need to switch to a Pokemon capable of using Special-based attacks, even if they're not super effective. Brawly also has a Super Potion that he may use sometime during the fight to heal his Pokemon to full (50 HP). Refrain from affecting it with any status conditions, as that will trigger its ability, Guts, which increases its Attack by 50% if it's affected by a major status condition (note that confusion or infatuation do not count).
After taking down his Machop, he'll send out the star Pokemon on his team: Makuhita! It's at level 16 and, while possessing a little less Attack than Machop, has some strong moves at its disposal. Arm Thrust hits two to five times for 15 power per strike, meaning it can potentially do devastating damage. It has Knock Off, a Dark-type move (so it gets around a lot of Fighting-type-resistant Pokemon's resistances) that knocks off your held item for the rest of the fight, inflicting twice as much damage if you do have a held item equipped before it's knocked off. Yikes! Bulk Up is still a threat and you should keep it from using it too often, plus Sand Attack can mess with your accuracy.
After beating Brawly, he'll reward you with the Knuckle Badge, which ensures any traded Pokemon obey you up to level 30. He also gives you TM08 Bulk Up, which raises the user's Attack and Defense stats by one stage. It's a great move to use for your Physical-based attackers, especially when you're fighting other Physical-based attackers, because you can set a few Bulk Ups up and then sweep the rest of the Trainer's team.
He also tells you to check out the Granite Cave to the north and that his friend, Steven, might be there. That's exactly what you should do! After leaving the Gym and healing up your Pokemon at the Pokémon Center, of course. Once you've done that, head north, onto Route 106, and then check out the Granite Cave!
- Wingull is the first Flying-type Pokemon that you're able to catch, and it gets Wing Attack at level 8 to combat the Fighting-types of Dewford Gym. However, its low Attack means it isn't your best option, but at least it resists Fighting-type moves.
- Taillow is a better option than Wingull offensively thanks to its higher Attack stat and the fact it, too, learns Wing Attack (at level 13, though), but since it is part-Normal-type, Fighting-type moves do neutral damage. Investing a turn to use Focus Energy will boost the critical hit % of Wing Attack to 50% and is a great way to get around Brawly's Bulk Up.
- Zubat, found in the Granite Cave to the north, is one of your best options for the Gym. Its Poison/Flying-type has a double resistance to Fighting, so Fighting-type moves will do very little damage. It also gets Wing Attack at level 13 and has more Attack than Wingull, but less than Taillow.
- Ralts is rather rare, but its Psychic/Fairy-typing gives it another double resistance to Fighting. However, Brawly's Makuhita knows Knock Off, a strong Dark-type move, so even though it will just do neutral damage, Ralts doesn't have much Defense and won't be able to withstand it. You're best off with better options, but Ralts still works in a pinch.
- Beautifly is probably the absolute best option you can get at this point in the game. Being Bug/Flying-type, it has a double resistance to Fighting, plus it has a ton of Special Attack for this point in the game coupled with the Special-based Gust. Being Special-based, you get around moves like Bulk Up.
- Dustox is probably the second best option since it, too, uses Special-based moves and has a double resistance. It also has a ton of defensive stats, allowing it to take most hits very well. Use Psybeam over Gust, as it hits for more damage. The only exception is if you are fighting a Meditite, in which case you should use Gust instead.
- Combusken, though not a Flying-type, learns Peck at level 14 as a Torchic. It will be Combusken's strongest move against the Fighting-type Pokemon of the Gym. Torchic alone will likely not do sufficient damage to the stronger Fighting-type Pokemon, such as Brawly's, so try to make sure it is Combusken by then.
