Littleroot Town
Once you load up the game, you will be prompted on which language you want to use during your game. Be careful though, because once your pick one, you can't change it later unless you reset your profile! Once you are finished with that, your will be greeted by Professor Birch, who looks at bit... outdated. But don't worry soon your view changes and you will see that you are playing the game! After explaining the world of Pokemon, he will as you if you are a boy or a girl. This choice will not affect the game play at all, but rather who your rival will be throughout the game. Once you choose, enter you name. There is no default name anymore, however, the old versions of the games were Brendan or May. Again this won't really affect your game.
Professor Birch will then state that he is happy to know that you are moving to his hometown of Littleroot. Now that that's finished, the moving truck will stop and the door will open. Once you exit, your mother will greet stating that you should go upstairs and set your clock. It doesn't matter if you set it properly though because it will mirror your 3DS' clock. Once you head downstairs, your mom will tell you to hurry over because your dad is on TV, but you'll barely miss it! What a disappointment!
After all that commotion, she will tell you to say hi to the neighbors. Head out of the house and go to the house next door. As you enter you'll be greeted by your rival's mother, and will tell you that May/ Brendan is in his/her room. Head up the stairs and meet you rival. After some dialogue, he/she will head out.
At this point you can talk to people around town, but there is no real point unless that's your thing. If you just want to continue heading North out of Littleroot Town and on to Route 101!
Professor Birch is being chased by a Poochyena! He says to grab a Poke Ball in the bag lying on the ground.
You'll now be able to choose between the Grass-type Treecko, the Fire-type Torchic, and the Water-type Mudkip. Mudkip is most likely the best choice of the three, especially once it evolves, as it has great coverage against most of the Gym Leaders in the game. Torchic also becomes decent upon evolving and has alright coverage, Treecko is definitely the most challenging of the three to use, because it less super effective coverage against the Gym Leaders.
Once you pick one, you will engage in a battle against a Lv.3 Poochyena. No matter which starter you chose, the fight should be pretty simple. After winning the fight, Professor Birch will take you to his lab, and ask if you want to nickname your starter. He will also suggest that you go see his son/ daughter on Route 103. With that all finished it's time to head up to Oldale Town!

Route 101
Once you are done in Littleroot Town, you're going to want to head North to Route 101 to see some new Pokemon. It's a pretty simple Route, with a few basic Pokemon native there.
POKEMON FOUND ON ROUTE 101:
Sadly you can't catch any Pokemon yet because you don't have any Poke Balls. You will get these later and catch all of these Pokemon. I highly suggest that you fight a few to grind to level 7 so May/ Brendan will be easier to defeat. Once you are done exploring, head Nortthrough the grass, and enter Oldale Town.
POKEMON FOUND ON ROUTE 101:
- Zigzagoon: A very helpful Normal Type Pokemon, it can learn a lot of HM moves and has the Ability Pickup which allows it to pick up items whilst you walk around.
- Poochyena: A Dark Type Pokemon that isn't the best choice because doesn't learn any Dark Type moves for quite some time. It can learn some HM moves but again isn't the conventional choice in the long run.
- Wurmple: A Bug Type Pokemon that evolves rather early at level 7 and then level 10. It can evolve into Cascoon or Silcoon. What it turns into is essentially random, and can't be controlled. It's not that bad of a choice if you chose Treecko because it can be extremely useful against Brawly, a later Gym Leader.

Oldale Town
Once you head North through Route 101, you'll enter Oldale Town. It's quite boring here and really all there is to do is to talk to the PokeMart worker next to the Pokemon Center. He will say some things, and give you a Potion. A Potion is a basic healing item that restores 20 HP to an injured Pokemon. I suggest saving this for the fight with your rival coming up. You can't head west just yet, because a guy is "studying foot-prints." With that said, head north again to Route 103

Wingull | Uncommon |
Once you arrive, you need to traverse through the route until you find your rival: May/Brendan. After a bit of chatting, a battle will commence!
Depending on which starter you chose, you will fight something different. If you chose Mudkip, they will use Treecko. If you chose Torchic, they will use Mudkip. And finally if you chose Treecko, they will use Torchic. Regardless of the Pokemon, it will be Lv.5.
The fight itself should be pretty simple, just use your Normal Type attack. If you are around level 7 (as I suggested earlier in the walkthrough) you should have no problem at all unless they get a Critical-Hit on you. If you find yourself in a pinch, use that Potion that you got earlier as well.
Once you win the fight them, head back through Oldale Town and Route 101 to Littleroot once again. Once you arrive in Littleroot, head to Professor Birch's Lab. He will congratulate you on beating May/Brendan on your first try. He then decides to trust you with a PokeDex! He explains that a PokeDex is a "High-tech Encyclopedia that records data on Pokemon you've caught." Completing the PokeDex is often seen as the easier part of the game compared to the NationalDex, something I will explain when the time comes, but for now, don't worry about it. Once Birch is finished talking, your rival will congratulate you as well and also give you 10 Poke Balls! Now we can catch Pokemon! With all of these shenanigans rapped up, head back to Route 101 and Route 103 to catch those Pokemon you missed!

After obtaining the PokeDex from Prof. Birch, head west of Oldale Town. Previously this path was blocked by a man studying footprints. Once you first enter that Route, you'll notice a fair amount of tall grass. This is a hot-spot for catchinh lots of Pokemon. The chart I made above will tell you what Pokemon are here, and their rarity. Anyways, once you walk a bit out into the route, you will battle Youngster Allen, who uses a Lv.2 Taillow, and a Lv.4 Poochyena. Adjacent to him, are some Oran Berries and Pecha Berries. Press A to harvest them. Keep walking along the path you will run into Lass Tiana, who uses a Lv.5 Zigzagoon.
Keep heading west and you'll run into May or Brendan once again, this time pointing you in the direction of Petalburg City, the next destination. He/ she will also upgrade your PokeNav to be able to use Detector Mode. This will allow you to catch Pokemon with random egg moves. For example, if you see a Poochyena's tail sticking out of the grass, push forward lightly on the Circle Pad to sneak. On the bottom screen info about the Pokemon you are detecting will appear, saying it's egg move, level and a red "!" if you haven't caught the Pokemon yet.
Catch some cool Pokemon with this, otherwise just head west to Petalburg City!

Petalburg City
Once you arrive in Petalburg City you will see a Pokemon Center, and a Mart. Feel free to heal and buy some Poke Balls if you need to. As you head toward the center part of town, your Dad will be there and say that you can talk in the Gym. After talking about some things, a boy named Wally will enter the room tell your father that he is leaving and would like to have a Pokemon so he won't get lonely. Your Dad will give him a Pokemon and a Poke Ball, and sends you to supervise him. Wally walks you over to Route 102, were he encounters a Lv.5 Ralts. He battles it a bit and then catches it. After bringing you back to the Gym, he thanks you and upgrades your PokeNav, adding the PSS, Pokemon Amie, and Super Training. I personally, have only used to PSS in AS to battle a few friends but other than that, I haven't touched the others.
Functions of these items:
Your Dad will then suggest heading to Rustboro City for a Gym battle with Roxanne, the Gym Leader there. Head out of the Gym, and head to Route 104!
Functions of these items:
- PSS- Allows you to battle, trade, and communicate with other players over the Internet, and is very convenient.
- Pokemon Amie- Allows you to play and interact with your Pokemon, like Nintendogs, but has very fun games to play.
- Super Training- A slower, but more entertaining way to EV train you Pokemon. If you don't know what EVs are, then I can't explain it in 3 paragraphs if I wanted to.

As soon as you enter Route 104, you will notice the HUGE patch of grass. I have listed the Pokemon you can find there, as well as their rarity. Above the patch of grass is a house, this belongs to Mr. Briney. A man that will be important later on.
Below the patch is a small beach with a trainer that is optional to fight. This trainer is Youngster Billy and he uses a Lv.4 Seedot. Be careful of it's Bide, however, as it can wreck your team if you don't knock it out in two attacks. He also uses a Lv.6 Tailow, which shouldn't cause much threat. Above the patch once again you can find some Oran Berries and Pecha Berries, which heal 10HP and cure poison, respectively. Keep heading along the path to fight Rich Boy Winston who uses a Lv.8 Zigzagoon. He gives you alot of money, but uses a Full Restore, an item you won't be getting until way later on. Once you beat him, head in to Petalburg Woods!

From the start of the forest, head left a bit and fight Bug Catcher Lyle, who uses three Lv.5 Wurmple. Past him you can find a Paralyze Heal. Keep following the path until you reach a Devon Researcher who asks you if you have seen a Shroomish, one of the Pokemon in the forest. Suddenly he'll be ambushed by a Team Magma Grunt or a Team Aqua Grunt depending on which version of the game you have. The grunt will demand the research papers from him and asks you to help him out. Both versions of the Grunts will use a Lv.9 Poochyena. Be careful of it's howl which raises it's Attack Stat or you might be in some trouble.
After beating the Grunt, the researcher will gleefully thank you and gives you the Exp. Share! This item will allow all of you Pokemon to gain Exp, even if that Pokemon was never sent out. I find this item very useful for little kids who have trouble beating the game, or for walkthroughs,(such as this one) otherwise I don't use it. Keep heading west and fight Bug Catcher James who uses a Lv. 8 Nincada. Head north to find an ether and exit the forest. Once you leave the camera will move to another Grunt who informs her boss that the mission has failed. Route 104(north) |

Exiting Petalburg Woods you will find yourself on the northern part of Route 104, with more trainers and higher level Pokemon to fight.
Talk to the Youngster to obtain TM49 Echoed Voice. It's a Special-based Normal-type that has 40 power. Each time you use it consecutively it gains 40 power.
North of him is a Flower Shop talk to the woman in there to get the Wailmer Pail. But be careful, "watering cans are dangerous!" -Marriland, 2014. Talk to the little girl and she will give you an Oran Berry, which heals 10 HP and can be held by a Pokemon. Go west, following the path and fight Lady Cindy who uses a Lv.10 Zigzagoon. If you beat her she will reward you with a whopping $1,200! Just after her is Lass Haley who uses a Lv.6 Lotad and a Lv.8 Shroomish.
Keep heading north and have your first Double-battle of the game agains Twins Gina& Mia who use a Lotad and Seedot both Lv.9.
At the northern end of the bridge make sure to battle Fisherman Ivan who uses the riveting fishy trio: Magikarp, Magikarp, and Magikarp all being lv.7. Once you defeat the Death Trio, head north to Rustboro City!

Rustboro City
The second you enter the city, May (Or Brendan) will exit the Pokemon Mart. He/ She will show you the location of the Gym in the town, saying that they'll take it on when they've caught more Pokemon.
Inside of the Poke Mart, talk to the man by the counter and he'll give you TM54 False Swipe, a Normal- Type attack with 40 power. It will leave the opposing Pokemon with 1 HP. This move is extremely useful for catching weaker Pokemon.
To the north of the Poké Mart is the Pokémon Center. Inside, not only can you heal your Pokemon, but you can talk to a fellow over by the map and he'll say that you look like a certain Trainer class, such as Poké Fan. If you say no, then you can select a different Trainer class instead, and this class is the one that will be used for any Super-Secret Bases later on.
Right next door to the Pokemon Center, to the left, is Cutter's House. Talk to Mr. Cutter and he will grant you the first Hidden Machine — HM for short — in the game: HM01 Cut! Remember those prickly trees that keep blocking items or access to other areas? Well, if a Pokemon knows Cut, it can chop down those annoying trees. However, you need to have the Stone Badge before you can use the move outside of battle — otherwise it's a very underwhelming 50 power Physical-based Normal-type move that can't be forgotten until you reach the Move Deleter later in the game. Avoid teaching it to any of your main team, since you don't need it often and it's a pretty bad move.
The first building to the east of the Pokemon Center is the Trainers' School. The guy directly inside will tell you about the different badges in the Hoenn region. Talk to the teacher in the back and he'll give you the Quick Claw, an item which can be held by a Pokemon to give it a small chance to strike first in battle regardless of its Speed. It's particularly useful on slower Pokemon!
The large building behind the Pokemon Center has a few people living inside of it. Downstairs, you can use your DexNav to scan the Skitty, which will register it as seen in your Pokedex. On the second floor, talk to the Ace Trainer and he'll give you the Float Stone, which lowers the weight of any Pokémon holding it. It's useful for reducing the damage received from moves like Low Kick or Grass Knot. Talking to the young boy in the kitchen will net you a Premier Ball.
The Devon Corporation building is the enormous building in the northwest part of town. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do inside for now, as you are prevented from checking out the upper floors.
The Gym is in the northeast part of town. Whenever you're ready, feel free to enter, but there's still a bit more to do in town. The house to the right of the Gym has a boy who will offer to trade your Slakoth for his Makuhita. Although Slakoth is much rarer, found only in the Petalburg Woods, and you'll be able to get Makuhita after earning your Stone Badge, Makuhita makes earning that badge much easier, particularly if you don't have any Grass- or Water-type Pokemon yet.
The Makuhita you receive in the trade, is always Lv. 9, male, has a Brave nature (reduces Speed, raises Attack growth), has Guts for its ability to raise its Attack while affected by a status condition, and is also holding an X Attack. Using that X Attack and then letting loose its Arm Thrust is a great way to take on the Rustboro Gym. You can also trade your Pokémon directly from the PC, so you don't even need to have the Slakoth in your party.

Rustboro City Gym
The Rustboro City Gym specializes in Rock-type Pokémon, so Water-, Grass-, and Fighting-type Pokémon are your best bet. Ground is super effective as well, but there are virtually no options for such moves at this point in the game.
Pokemon that are good against Rock-Type early in the game are:
Having any of these Pokémon at or above level 12 before entering the Gym is recommended, though not required.
As soon as you enter the Gym, you'll be greeted by Roxanne, the Gym Leader. She heads to the back of the Gym, though, leaving you free to explore.
There are three Trainers in the Gym for you to fight, although all three are avoidable if you follow the right path. The first trainer is Youngster Josh using Geodude Lv.7 and Geodude Lv.9. The second Trainer is Youngster Tommy who uses Geodude Lv.10. The third and final trainer is Schoolkid Georgia using Geodude Lv.10. All of these Trainers can be avoided if you wish, but I don't recomend it.
Now at the back, the only Trainer that remains is the Gym Leader herself. If your Pokémon are injured, you may want to run back to the Pokémon Center to heal them up before the battle starts. You can also save your game beforehand should things not go your way to avoid losing any money.

After you've defeated Roxanne, she'll bestow upon you the Stone Badge, which ensures that traded Pokémon up to level 20 will always obey you and will also allow you to use the Hidden Move Cut outside of battle to chop down prickly trees. She'll also give you TM39 Rock Tomb, which teaches her favorite move, Rock Tomb, a 60 power Physical-based Rock-type move that always lowers the foe's Speed. Quite a few non-Rock-type Pokémon can learn it, too, so it's a great move to improve your coverage.
After that head on to Route 116!
